Application Information

Dear STIM applicant,

I am excited that you are interested in missions and the Student Training in Missions (STIM) program.  As an internship in cross-cultural ministry, STIM will expose you to the difficulties, the joys, the anxieties, and the excitement of being a “missionary”.  Should God lead you to participate in STIM, you should be prepared for radical changes in your self-view, your values, your priorities, and your dependence on God.  Cross-cultural experiences will change you in ways which make you a better servant of God.

Please prayerfully consider whether or not God would have you participate in STIM.  This is a serious commitment that will demand your time prior to the summer field experience.  There are three orientation weekends throughout the spring semester which have been set for:  January 23-25, February 27-March 1, and April 3-5, 2009.  There is also a re-entry weekend in September after you return from the field.

During this semester of preparation, you will be given study assignments and be required to work on raising funds and prayer support for the program.  When making your commitment to be a part of the STIM program, be sure that you can participate in ALL of these preparation weekends.

We are committed to seeing that the STIM program not only affect your life, but also the life of your chapter and local church.   You should consider yourself an ambassador to your chapter and church friends on behalf of world missions.  We ask your commitment to being teachable and willing to serve throughout the weekends and the summer.  We also ask your commitment to participate fully in the weekends and follow through on assignments that are given.

At this site, you will find a STIM application, four references, a letter to your staff, some placement info, and a Release/Doctrine/Commitment Signature page.  The procedure for applying is listed below.  Please Read Carefully!!

1.  Submit your application only if you are committed to full participation in the STIM program.  This is necessary because STIM makes a commitment to missions boards on behalf of all participants.  (i.e. If you are accepted you will participate.)

2.  Discuss the STIM program with your parents and obtain their permission.  It is imperative that you honor them and remain under their authority.  They are welcome to call or email Amy Phillips with questions.

3.  Talk with your staff worker about your desire to apply for STIM.  He or she can help you assess your readiness for the experience and give you some guidance about what projects to consider.

4.  Please download the application from this website, fill it out as a Word document and EMAIL AS AN ATTACHMENT to blueridgestim@gmail.com by November 30. The application is then forwarded on to a mission agency. Please fill out the application seriously. Some mission boards accept the STIM applications in lieu of their own. It will be used extensively in determining your readiness for STIM and your field placement.

5.  Give the reference forms to your pastor, a roommate, your IV staff worker, and an IVCF Cteam member or chapter leader.  Give them plenty of time to fill it out and follow up to make sure it has been sent to us on time.  (It is also a good idea to give them a stamped envelope with Amy’s address on it in order to return the reference to her.)  If you live at home or in a single, ask another student friend from campus to fill out the roommate form.  If you do not have a pastor who knows you well, ask a youth group leader, elder in the church, Sunday school teacher or someone like that to fill out the reference.

6.  YOU  must take initiative to set up some time with your staff worker to talk about STIM.  If you do not know your staff well, the enclosed “interview sheet” may be helpful.  After talking with your staff, give the reference form to your staff.

7.  Let your chapter leadership know that you are applying to STIM and ask for their commitment to partner with you and help you in fund raising if you are accepted to the program.

8.  SOME ITEMS MUST BE SENT THROUGH SNAIL MAIL.
a. Sign the Release,  the Doctrinal Basis, and the Commitment Statement
(found on the same page).  You must sign in all three places.
b. Enclose an $10.00 non-refundable application fee (make checks payable to Amy Phillips).  It is not a good idea to send cash in the mail.
c. Enclose a recent picture of yourself.  This picture is not for acceptance or placement purposes, but we will use it to help learn names and faces during STIM weekends.

9.  Return all items to Amy Phillips, postmarked by Nov. 30, 2008.  Please DO NOT use any form of mail that requires my signature to receive or requires me to be present to receive the application.  (This saves me lots of trips to the post office - thanks!)

10.  A word to those of you who are Teaching Fellows (the rest of you can skip this paragraph and read on.)  Those who administrate the teaching fellows program will not let you out of your obligation to attend the mid-July teaching fellows training.  Do not apply for STIM thinking you will get out of it later in the semester.  It doesn’t happen. If there are projects listed that return in time for you to make that training - you are welcome to apply.  Make sure to clearly note the dates you are available and the fact that you are a teaching fellow on the front of the application.

In early December STIM staff will review all applications.  We will then decide who seems to be ready to participate in STIM.  We will tentatively place you on a summer project  listed in the placement information.  This will be your summer assignment unless there are unforeseen difficulties in confirming the placement or some other unforeseen difficulty arises.  You will be contacted in late December about the status of your acceptance to the program.

We believe this training is valuable not only for overseas ministry, but for life as well.  Know that I and the other STIM staff will be praying that God will lead you and give you  wisdom  as you consider giving yourself to this experience with STIM.  May God bless you!

In Him,
Amy Phillips
