STIM Donor Frequently Asked Questions

1. $4000 seems high. Why so much money?

STIM students are raising quite a bit of money. But it is comparable to most mission projects of similar length and program. And included in this cost are three weekends of training and one weekend of reentry and debriefing!

2. What exactly does the money that STIM students raise cover?

The money students raise covers the cost of participating in each training weekend (housing, food, materials), the summer project expenses such as food, transportation, housing, materials, summer travel expenses (both domestic and international airfare), international visas, some fundraising materials, and overhead charged by InterVarsity to process and receipt tax-deductible gifts.

3. Does that mean there are some expenses that are not covered by the money the STIM student raises?

Yes, STIM students will need to cover the cost of their passports, postage and copying for fundraising letters, immunizations required for the country they will be in for the summer, and personal spending money while overseas.

4. What happens if a STIM student is unable to raise all the money required of him or her?

Each STIM student has the same fundraising goal. However, we raise money as a team. That means that some students might raise less than the target and others more. Those who raise more help out those who raise less. We hope that each student will make the same effort in fundraising, but are aware that we cannot always control the outcome of those efforts. Any money raised and not used in a given year will be applied to students participating in STIM the following year.

Only a few times in the history of STIM have we had to tell a student that they cannot go overseas because enough money was not raised.

5. What happens if I support a STIM student and then they are unexpectedly unable to participate in the summer project?

This has occasionally happened due to an unexpected illness or family situation. All expenses related to STIM and the summer project that the student has already incurred will be paid out of what the student has raised. If, after expenses are met, there is still money left in the student’s name, that money will be held for participation in a future project or applied to other STIMmers. Money donated to InterVarsity becomes the property of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Donors can request that their gifts be transferred to another charitable organization.

6. If I am going to support a STIM student, when does the money need to be in?

Ideally, we would like all money to be raised by the first week of May. However, donors are welcome to send their gifts in to InterVarsity throughout the spring and summer.

7. Do I really need to send the STIM student the response card that came with my letter?

YES!! It is so helpful to the student to receive that response card from you. First of all, it is so very encouraging to open a mailbox and find it full of response cards! Second, returning the response card to the student allows him or her to know about your gift and include it in his or her fundraising total regardless of when you actually send in the check.

8. What happens when I send my check to InterVarsity?

InterVarsity (in Madison WI) has a special account set up under the STIM student’s name in connection with Blue Ridge STIM. When you send your check to the national office, InterVarsity will send you a receipt showing how much was received and the account the money was put in. The receipt will indicate that the gift is tax-deductible.

9. Any special instructions for sending in my donation?

Please send your check to InterVarsity in the Business Reply Envelope provided by the STIM student. It will designate your gift to Blue Ridge STIM in the name of the student you are supporting. Make your check out to InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

10. Are there other ways to give?

Yes, go to www.intervarstiy.org/donate to find out how to give by credit card or electronic transfer. It is very important that you indicate the name of the student you are giving to and that they are participating in BLUE RIDGE STIM.

To donate online directly to a STIM student, follow this link to InterVarsity's donation website. Click on Blue Ridge STIM to find a list of all current STIM students. Click on your student's name to designate a gift to them.

11. What kind of contact should I expect from the STIM student once I indicate that I would like to support their summer experience (either in prayer or financially or both!)

You can expect the STIM student to be in touch with you before they leave the country with an update on the project and some suggestions for prayer while they are overseas. The student will also send you an update when they return so that you can see the ways that God worked in them and through them while overseas. Students who have access to email while they are overseas are sometimes able to send occasional updates from their summer country.

You are always welcome to contact the STIM student if you want more information or would like to hear more about his or her summer experience.
